Soccer Nerd Dream Comes True

My hero retiring made me realize that I hadn’t blogged about THE MOST AMAZING THING EVER. But, first, Abby Wambach…man, you’re the toughest badass I’ve ever seen take the field. So sad to see you go, but I cannot wait to see what you do now.

Soccer has been a part of my life since I can remember. My two older brothers played and since I always did everything to be just like them (including an unfortunate 2nd grade haircut), I played as soon as I was old enough. Rec, to club, to high school to college (Wake Forest). When I had the chance to (1) meet (2) be interviewed by Megan Rapinoe (what??) and (3) photograph her, I bawled my eyes out. Seriously, this was a dream come true.

Demon Deacons, circa 1994. omg. We are so old. I am second row on the right so damn happy to be there.

Pinoe (we’re bff’s now, obvs) was so smart, so aware of the importance of her role and so easy to talk to. I was so impressed. Best wishes to her on a speedy recovery (just tore her ACL). We brought a group down for the shoot which included a few of my girls’ teammates as well as two of my college teammates and their girls. Amazing to be able to share this with girls I’ve know forever.

Thank you to the Women’s National Team for a day we will remember forever.

Here’s a link to the interview and the video.

Chicago Bliss {Commercial Photographer}

What an amazing shoot. Absolutely loved this experience from start to finish. Oxygen was a dream client and the women of the Chicago Bliss were so much fun to work with, had so much energy and were so engaged with the young girls we had on set.

The idea behind this shoot was (1) promote Oxygen’s new show Pretty. Strong. about these badass, football playing women and (2) showcase these women as the athletes and role models that they are.  I am really proud of the work we did.  The shoot was great collaboration between the Bliss, the young girls that came to set (including my two daughters and niece), and the camera crew who was there to film it all.  I have to say, wearing a live mic the entire shoot was a new experience for me.  :)

We shot in downtown Chicago at one of the local parks, had some typical September Chicago weather, some rain, some sun and some wind.  I absolutely love the rain shots.  They work so well with these ready for anything women and girls.

Here is the video from our shoot.

Also an interview with me about duck face, other badass women and general stuff.  :)

Samantha - I found your blog via the A Mighty Girl facebook page. I love your photos! The perspective, composition, and subject matter are all marvelous.

I’m a huge fan of american football, too, and adore these photos you took of strong women players.

Do you have a photobook available? I’d love to share these with my students (I teach at a women’s university in Tokyo) in print form, if possible.

September in the South

I love the fall.

Although fall weather doesn’t really start for us here in Georgia until October. Hard for this Jersey girl.

I am enjoying September a ton though, just got back from a trip to Chicago (commercial shoot, shot for the book and visited family). Running from soccer practices to play practices to the another soccer practice or game. The big one is playing club soccer for the first time and it is a commitment! Man. I’ve seen a lot of metro Atlanta just in these past few months. Been….interesting.:)

I’ve been shooting a bunch commercially and dying to share, and will as soon as I can. Gotten some great stuff!

Some personal images from the past few weeks.

Whitney Shortt - I love your work, Kate! You inspire me everyday to work harder to be a better photographer. Please do a workshop someday! I’d love to meet you and learn!

Staybridge Suites.

I love hotels.

Shooting in them. (the light!).

Staying in them. (they’re so clean. and the beds are always made, unlike home.)

Eating in them. (I’m not so great with the cooking thing.)

So, when I got the chance to shoot for Staybrige Suites with an awesome agency, Bluesky, I was pumped.

Kids, food, hotels, s’mores, professional dogs (that know how to limp on command? Come ON!) HECK YES.

Also, getting to work with my absolute favorite voice over talent, Mike Schatz (also, the creative director at Bluesky) again was awesome. Back when I was on the agency side of things, Mike was my go to voice over guy.

Summer….

I love summer. I love the lack of schedules, going to the pool, sleeping in a little later, time for waffles in the mornings. I love that my job allows this. Feeling so thankful and lucky to have the opportunities that I have from doing something I love so much (being a mom and a photographer).

June took us to Boston to shoot for an amazing non-profit, called the Play Brigade. We got to shoot anywhere we wanted to in Fenway Park…I still seriously cannot believe this. My husband is a lifelong Red Sox fan and he was there helping me that day and got to walk on the field, sit in the dugout, see the Green Monster seats. We also shot all around Boston (Lynn, Franklin, Brookline) to see some amazing girls for the upcoming “Strong is the New Pretty” book. From roller derby girls to violinists…I swear, not sharing these images (gotta keep some for the book!) is so stinking hard!

Also, headed up to North Carolina to take my daughter to my alma mater, Wake Forest University, for her first ever sleep away soccer camp. Same coach I had when I played there…talk about a full circle moment. So proud of her for sticking it out and dealing with homesickness….here is her coming home. Missed that face. Got to shoot some more amazing girls up in NC…some artists, valedictorians and hikers.

The best of June…
